How to Find the Right Paving Contractor

There are many reasons to consider a newly paved driveway. For starters, it can add value to your property, increase curb appeal, and provide a great place to park your vehicles and play. Whether to install a driveway or not is the easy part. The hard part is ensuring you hire a paving contractor you can trust. There are many options for contractors so to help you make your decision, here are a few tips on how to find the right paving contractor.

Things to consider

Paving contractors all have a few common factors you will want to look for. The following are things to consider:

Experience

When a paving contractor has worked in your area for years, you know they have invested a lot in their reputation. Local, established contractors are by far your best option when hiring a paving contractor.

Local Presence

Hiring a local paving contractor is key to a long-term, well-maintained driveway. Hiring local ensures you have a contractor within easy reach if an issue arises. Also, as mentioned above, they are invested in the community. They have a reputation to uphold. Word of mouth spreads quickly within a community, and they want to ensure that word is good.

Insurance

Paving is not an easy job, and like any home improvement project, it has its potential dangers. From operating heavy equipment to working with hot asphalt, accidents can happen. Make sure your chosen paving contractor covers liability insurance as well as workers’ compensation. This is very important. If a worker is injured on your property, you want the contractor to be covering the bills.

Licensed

In addition to insurance coverage, you will want to ensure your paving contractor is licensed to do work in your state.

Wait… there’s more!

In addition to the items about the contractor, here are a few things to consider about the job itself.

Quotations

Don’t settle on one paving contractor right away. Get at least three quotations from various local contractors. Go over these quotes in detail and ask any questions you may have. In particular, ask about the thickness of pavement they will be laying. Contractors offering low ball prices will often be able to do this by skimping on pavement thickness. This may seem like a value, but you will pay for it in the long run with a weaker driveway that deteriorates quicker.

Warranty

Make certain your chosen contractor’s work comes with a warranty on materials and workmanship. You will want to get a one-year warranty at minimum as material issues, and faulty workmanship issues will normally creep up within the first year.
