Is Autumn too Cold for Asphalt Work?
When you think of paving, the season that likely comes to mind is summer. That thought is quickly followed by, “How do these guys pave when it's so hot?!” While it is hot, summer is an ideal time to pave because, despite how uncomfortable the heat may be, it is perfect for working with asphalt. That said, what about the fall? Is it too cold in autumn for asphalt repairs and paving? The short answer is no, but let's look at why.
Ideal conditions for asphalt
Hot mix asphalt requires a specific temperature range to compact and set properly. That internal temperature range must remain between 175 and 275 degrees while work is completed. Colder weather will shorten the paving contractor's length of time to lay and compact asphalt because it cools much quicker. You've probably noticed in the fall months paving contractor trucks with covers over the beds. This is to help them maintain the heat on the asphalt as they transport it to the job site. It's still perfectly fine to work with asphalt in autumn; it just means work must be done quickly. The ideal outdoor temperature for paving is at least 70 degrees.
Time is critical
Regardless of the season, asphalt must be laid promptly. Many asphalt companies can easily install a driveway in the spring and summer. However, suppose a company has failed to optimize its equipment and processes. In that case, completing a satisfactory job in the autumn months will prove challenging. This shoddy work may also lead to future failures of the asphalt.
On average, a contractor has 15 to 45 minutes to lay asphalt. The lower the outdoor temperature and the thinner the layer of asphalt, the shorter timeframe they have. The contractor must be able to compact the top layer in time properly. If not, the property owner may experience cracking asphalt throughout the year.
Repairs
The same rules apply to asphalt repair. Again, time is of the essence. However, what works in the contractor's favor is that these are normally smaller jobs requiring less material. Because of this, autumn is an ideal time to tackle small repair work.
Autumn – yes or no?
Despite the above issues, it is perfectly fine to do asphalt work in autumn with one condition. However, you need a reputable paving contractor with the experience and equipment to do the job correctly. Autumn paving isn't for amateurs.
