Specifications of an Asphalt Driveway
It might not seem like the composition and structure of the asphalt used in paving a driveway matters all that much, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Asphalt is ideal for driveway paving because it can adjust to extreme temperatures and natural wear from vehicles while providing a smooth and continuous surface.
The materials and methods by which the asphalt is laid can alter the effectiveness and durability of commercial and residential driveways. For example, if a driveway is too thin, the weight of materials on top will not be evenly distributed. This can result in faster deterioration and damage, making it vital to construct them properly.
The specifications for driveways, both residential and commercial, may vary by location, but there are commonalities among most locality requirements. The layers of an asphalt driveway are as follows:
Layer 1 - Subbase course
Usually made of soil and gravel
If the soil is mostly clay, excavation may be necessary to avoid problems in the future
Layer 2 - Base course
Made of high-quality crushed stone, usually required to be between four and six inches thick
Layer 3 - Asphalt
Minimum thickness of two inches
The primary difference between residential and commercial driveways is found in the thickness of the asphalt and granular base layers. Residential driveways are a bit thinner as they typically bear less weight. For example, the aggregate middle layer of residential driveways typically maxes out at six inches, whereas commercial lots go up to eight inches. Additionally, residential driveways may have an asphalt layer that is two inches thick. Commercial lots should use three inches for their top layer to ensure a more durable finish. Finding a reputable paving company that understands these specifications is important regardless of which asphalt driveway is being laid.
