Hiring a Driveway Contractor: Questions to Ask

When it is time to replace or install a new asphalt driveway, it is probably not in your best interest to start another DIY project. Driveway installation can be a complicated process that should be done by a trusted paving professional. Hiring a driveway contractor can be stressful, and it is vital that you ask the right questions. Here are some things to ask your potential driveway contractor.

Do you have references and project photos?

Speaking with previous customers and reviewing completed project photos is a great way to gauge how committed a driveway contractor is to their work. Ask to speak with a prior customer to gain insight into their overall experience and how their driveway is holding up. After all, if you spend the money to hire a professional you certainly want it to last.

What is the condition of your equipment?

A good contractor is going to invest in good equipment.  Outdated equipment can sometimes cause issues during a driveway installation, so you want to make sure that if the contractor does have older equipment it is properly maintained.

Can I have a copy of your insurance?

Don’t be afraid to ask a driveway contractor about their insurance. It is extremely easy for them to contact their insurance agent to send you proof of insurance. While the best contractors take their time making sure they do everything carefully, unforeseen events can sometimes happen. As a homeowner, you want to be assured they have the insurance to cover damage expenses.

Are you able to provide proper drainage with my driveway?

One of the most important elements of a good driveway is drainage because if the water sits it can destroy the driveway over time. It is okay to ask a contractor what their process is to ensure your driveway will drain.

Will you use subcontractors?

It is always a good idea to ask if there will be employees doing the job or subcontractors. That way you can make sure any subcontractors are required to have the same insurance as the driveway contractor, and that they will stand by their work as if it were their own.

Hiring a driveway contractor can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Find a local and trustworthy paving company, like John Parichuk Paving, and ask as many questions as you need to feel confident that your next driveway is going to be a great investment.
