Pros and Cons of Asphalt Driveways

When you are looking to either install a new driveway or replace an old one, asphalt will be one of the options you explore. You will probably also notice that most driveways in your neighborhood are asphalt. That’s because asphalt is an affordable and reliable choice for creating a long-lasting driveway for your home. There are several things to consider when it comes to installing an asphalt driveway. Here are both the pros and cons of asphalt driveways so you can make an informed decision.

Pros

Curbside Appeal – Asphalt traditionally has a deep black coloring that, with proper maintenance, will not fade with exposure to sunlight. Black is a color that will go well with any home décor and exterior color of your siding. For this reason, asphalt is an excellent choice for curb appeal.

Easy to Maintain – With a properly installed asphalt driveway, you get a very flat surface. This makes it easy to remove snow, grass clippings, leaves, and other debris.

Environmentally Friendly – Did you know asphalt can be recycled? Also, after it is installed, it will not release chemicals or gasses into the air.

Noise Reduction – Asphalt driveways give you a very smooth surface to drive your vehicle over. Because of this, it can reduce the amount of noise your vehicle makes and reduces general noise around your home.

Permeable – Most people do not think asphalt is a permeable surface. However, asphalt is extremely permeable. Water will pass through the asphalt and into the ground below, preventing the pooling of water on the driveway surface.

Cons

Cure Time – Asphalt can take up to three months to a year to completely cure. During this time, it is softer. Though you can drive on asphalt within a few days, it’s easier to damage in the first year. Be especially careful when driving to not sit still and turn your wheels. This will cause your tires to dig into the asphalt.

Durability – Pay close attention to the edges of your asphalt driveway. Asphalt is prone to crumbling at the edges or having cracks develop there as well. You will want to repair this as soon as you spot them to avoid a more significant issue later.

Slight Fading – Over time, and as you drive on it more and more, the initial deep black of your driveway will likely fade to grey. To eliminate fading, you will need to seal your driveway regularly.

Surface Oil – During the initial first days of having an asphalt driveway installed, oil may rise to the surface. This oil can be picked up on your shoes and brought into your home or vehicle. When it comes to your next asphalt driveway, you want to know you are dealing with an expert asphalt paving contractor.
